Amtrak is the United States’ national passenger rail provider, offering intercity train service across a vast network that connects communities large and small. Founded in 1971, Amtrak operates more than 30 routes spanning over 21,000 miles of track and serves over 500 destinations in 46 states, as well as Washington, D.C.

 

While Cortland County no longer has direct passenger rail service, nearby stations provide convenient access to the national rail network. The closest major connection point is the Syracuse Regional Transportation Center in Syracuse, located about 37 miles north of Cortland. From there, travelers can connect to regional and long-distance Amtrak routes.

 

Amtrak trains link major metropolitan areas with smaller regional hubs, providing an alternative to driving or flying. Popular routes include high-frequency service along the Northeast Corridor—connecting cities like Boston, New York City, and Washington—as well as long-distance routes that travel across the country.
